Travelling Ayurvedic way

We all love to travel and explore, so let's make the journey simple, easy and healthier.

In Ayurveda, travelling is associated with Vata Dosha. Vata is a combination of air and space, which governs all the movements in the body.

Therefore, it’s common to have vata imbalances like insomnia, cold hands and feet, anxiety, dryness, bloating, constipation etc while travelling.

We need to focus on Vata pacifying foods like light, warm, cooked and moist food which is gently spiced with warming spices like cumin, coriander and ginger.

I recently travelled from London to Bangalore, India, which was a long flight of 9 hours. So here I am sharing few ayurvedic tips that helped me to balance.

Pre travel day : We usually try to focus on packing etc and just want to finish the left overs food from the fridge, instead plan ahead and try to eat something light like khichadi, root veggies soups and get a good sleep. Follow the dinacharya(details below).

Travel day: Stay hydrated, try to drink warm water through out your journey. Apply rose water to moisturise your skin, have ginger teas. Avoid eating dry snacks. Wear socks, scarf, blanket and stay warm.

Post travel: Once you reach your destination try to take rest, and have a good sleep. Remember to soak in the sun for 15-20 minutes that will help you with jet lag. Then slowly get back to the routine.

During your stay:

1.Enjoy the local, seasonal fruits and veggies ( I had lots of fresh coconut water, fresh buttermilk, pomegranate fruits, and varieties of warm cooked veggies).

2.To keep your digestion at it’s best you can drink CCF tea(Coriander, Cumin and Fennel). I always carry a small jar that has a mix of these spices. All you need is hot water and the tea is ready. Triphala capsules can also help.

3. Try to follow dinacharya( daily routine) as much as you can.

  • Nasya (Nasal drops) can use few drops of sesame oil acts as a protective barrier.

  • 1 tsp of Chywanaprash jam to boost your immunity.

  • 10 minutes of Abhyanga(warm sesame oil massage) .

  • 5 minutes of Breathing meditation.

4. Make sure you have light dinners and a good night sleep.

Enjoy your travels Ayurvedic way❤️
